Creative Sunday Practice #5
Some objects just ask to be photographed, and some don’t. For this week’s Creative Sunday Practice, we’re exploring what usually falls into the second category… until you actually start looking.
This Sunday, your umbrella can become the unexpected inspiration for amazing photos taken with your smartphone.
Try noticing how the ribs create patterns, how the fabric catches highlights, or how a shadow stretches across the floor. A half-open umbrella can look cinematic. A closed one, sculptural.
You might ask, “Well, what if I don’t have an umbrella at home?” And that’s perfect. This week’s challenge is all about improvisation.
Recreate the shape using something else: a lamp, a bowl, a fan, even a pile of snacks. The point isn’t to reproduce the object but to explore its visual rhythm and see how far your imagination can stretch.
Remember, this weekly smartphone photography ritual isn’t about taking “good photos.” It’s about building creative reflexes and learning to notice how ordinary things can transform once you give them your attention.
So, rain or shine, take ten minutes, grab your phone, and see what you can uncover. And I’ll be back next Sunday with a new idea to keep your eyes (and camera) in shape.
